INCREASED CASES OF FEVER AND OTHER SYMPTOMS AMONG CHILDREN

The Ministry of Health has received surveillance reports of increased cases of fever among children less than five years of age. In some cases, accompanying symptoms have included flu-like symptoms such as cough, cold, body aches and feeling generally unwell, as well as vomiting and diarrhea. While several viruses can potentially cause these symptoms, initial testing has thus far ruled out COVID-19 in the majority of these cases. While investigations are ongoing the general public is reminded that, regardless of the cause, the following hygienic measures can prevent further spread of these germs:
? Avoid close contact with people who are sick
? Stay at home when you are sick. Parents in particular are asked to refrain from sending sick children to day care or school before being cleared by a healthcare provider.
? Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
? Wash your hands often with soap and warm water for 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.
? Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
? Practice other good health habits. Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces at home, work or school, especially when someone is ill. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.

The general public is also hereby reminded that, in addition to COVID-19 vaccination, the World Health Organization also recommends annual flu vaccination for the following:
? pregnant women at any stage of pregnancy
? children aged between 6 months to 5 years
? elderly individuals (aged more than 65 years)
? individuals with chronic medical conditions
? health-care workers
