The Anguilla National Youth Council in partnership with Abba’s House Anguilla and Caribbean Education and Culture Foundation – St. Maarten, provided the opportunity to five (5) young persons to travel to St. Maarten and participate in an Erasmus plus project, entitled ‘We Choose Green’. The youth exchange was held from 27 May to 4 June 2022, and included participants from Italy, Lithuania, St. Maarten and Malta. Participants were allowed to learn about environmental problems, discuss and share their knowledge with others, engage and learn from locals and identify practical solutions that would help to make meaningful changes to their local communities.
Activities included a beach clean-up, group reflections, exploration of the island, discussions with a representative of Government, and a visit to a local farm. The discussions revealed that participating countries each faced similar environmental issues despite their size and location. Through mini workshops and sessions, participants were tasked to create environmental campaigns on eco living, sustainable eating and eco-tourism that would raise awareness of the issues, while urging its viewers to practice eco-friendly and sustainable living.
The general public is encouraged to adopt more sustainable practices within the home and communities. Small changes compounded over a period of time can create a healthier and cleaner environment for each of us.
Finally, yet importantly, a special thanks are extended the Department of Youth of Culture and Fun time Charters for their support and invaluable contributions towards this project.
