In preparation for the 2022 Awards Ceremony, the Malliouhana Poetry Committee has announced the names of the Culture Bearer Awardees for 2022. In recognition of their contributions to the literary and cultural development of Anguilla, the Committee will pay tribute to Mrs. Evalie Bradley, Tr. Hyacinth E. Hughes and Mr. Colville Petty on Tuesday, May 17, 2022 at the Public Library.
Veteran Teacher, Playwright and Poet, Mrs. Hyacinth E. Hughes, exudes a passion and enthusiasm for poetry, storytelling and the performing arts. No stranger to the stage, she is a regular performer in local church and community programmes. She has participated in every Malliouhana Poetry Competition from its inception in 2007 and published her first anthology of poems entitled “Sweet River Song” in 2016.
Philanthropist and performing artiste, Mrs. Evalie Bradley, is well-known for her dramatic monologues depicting various aspects of the history and culture of Anguilla. She embodies and exudes the spirit of the Anguillian jollification in her care and support for others, and uses her talents to entertain and educate in the preservation of Anguillian culture.
Author, Historian and Museum Curator, Mr. Colville Petty is known for his dedication to the preservation of Anguilla’s history and culture. He opened the Heritage Collection Museum in 1996 and over the years he has authored several books about the island’s history and people.
Bradley, Hughes and Petty are the latest cultural stalwarts to be honoured by the Malliouhana Poetry Committee. They will be presented with their awards at the 2022 Malliouhana Poetry Performance Round and Awards scheduled for Tuesday, May 17th at 6:00 p.m. at the Public Library in The Valley – under the theme, “Dare to Hope”. During that ceremony, the winners of the 2022 Competition will also be announced.
The Malliouhana Poetry Competition is organised by the University of the West Indies Open Campus Anguilla in collaboration with the Anguilla Library Service, the Department of Youth and Culture and the Anguilla Community College. The Awards Ceremony is free and open to the public.
