As a part of its ongoing Social Responsibility and Community Outreach Programme, the University of the West Indies Open Campus Guild of Students – Anguilla Chapter Executive, has donated USD $150.00 to the iSpeak Autism Society of Anguilla.
On Friday 1st April, 2022, Anguilla Chapter Guild Chair & Regional Guild Secretary, Ms. Melissa Harrigan; Anguilla PRO & UWI STAT Ambassador, Ms. Shermel Hodge; and UWI STAT Ambassador, Ms. Tyeisha Emmanuel – presented Ms. Annishka White of the iSpeak Autism Society with the contribution towards the awareness activities and initiatives for Autism Awareness Month.
April is recognised as Autism Awareness Month across the globe and, this year, the iSpeak Autism Society is celebrating Autism Awareness under the theme, “I’m not Different, I’m a Special Edition”. The celebrations include a week of activities geared towards creating experiences for those in our community who are affected, and informational webinars featuring regional perspectives on managing this disability, and crafting a way forward to improve experiences for those persons in our communities who are coping with this disability.
Following the presentation, The UWI Guild Executive and UWI STAT Ambassadors engaged Ms. White in discussion on the challenges emanating from the lack of awareness, availability of facilities and resources, support and necessary educational and legal frameworks to support persons in our community, and their families, who are coping with this disability. The UWI Open Campus Anguilla Administrative Staff, UWI Guild Executive and UWI STAT Ambassadors, stand in full support of the iSpeak Autism Society in its effort to raise awareness – and chart a course for establishing mechanisms which can improve the quality of learning and life for autistic persons in our community.
