How likely is it that we will see new hotel development on the eastern part of Anguilla in the near future?
Premier, Dr Ellis Webster, and Minister of Economic Development, Mr Kyle Hodge, believe that the eastern part of Anguilla will be home to new development projects in short order.
“The Savannah Bay Development Project is right now being worked on,” the Premier noted at the government’s press briefing on Monday, March 7.
He told the media that the land for the project was bought by a corporation in Naples, Florida, and that representatives of that company are currently on island working on the project.
He also stated that the Savannah Bay Project is expected to yield a marina, two hotels, luxury villas, and condos – all part of the development of the eastern area of the island.
“Currently, a memorandum of understanding (MOU) is being worked on and we hope to get [the project] started as soon as the logistics are worked out. We have been wanting that to happen to help the people not only on the eastern end of the island, but all of Anguilla.
“With all of our MOUs, we require a social project along with a bond or an escrow account that any third-party contractor – foreign to Anguilla – will [agree] to protect the Anguillian workers.”
Premier Webster indicated that a boardwalk in the Island Harbour area is the proposed social project attached to the Savannah Bay development.
Minister Kyle Hodge noted that in addition to the Savannah Bay project, and the new medical school project, there are some other projects proposed for the development of the eastern part of the island.
He stated: “There are two projects to start in the Shoal Bay [East] area. A MOU is being worked on [to build] a mega luxury villa that should be started by September, and talks are ongoing to build a retirement village centre. A fish processing plant is also being talked about for the Island Harbour area.”
Mr. Hodge added that in addition to the projects on the eastern end of the island, his Ministry is actively working on development projects elsewhere on the island – ongoing discussion on expansion of Le Blue at Crocus Bay, finalising the lease for the pond as part of a project at Rendezvous, and signing the completed MOU with investors on the Altamer project at Shoal Bay West.
