As part of the activities marking Social Work Week 2022, The University of The West Indies (UWI) Open Campus Anguilla is continuing its partnership with the Department of Social Development. This year the collaboration will take the form of another awareness-building information forum on the Anguilla Child Protection Act. The session will take place at the Auditorium of the Orealia Kelly Primary School in Stoney Ground at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 17, 2022.
Social Work Day is observed around the world on the third Tuesday of March each year, as a time to recognise and celebrate the important contributions of Social Workers. In highlighting this year’s focus on the Child Protection Act, Commissioner of Social Development, Ms. Lauraine Gumbs, notes that, “Every child has the right to grow, learn and play, safe from any form of harm; and in keeping with the United Nations Conventions of the Rights of the Child, this Act, established in 2019, recognises the need to take legislative action to provide for the protection of children and the preservation of their fundamental rights and freedoms.” The Child Protection Act is the first major piece of modern legislation which speaks to the rights and protection of children in Anguilla and the Department of Social Department plays an integral role in its implementation.
In salute to the Department and Social Workers everywhere, Manager of the British Overseas Territories Open Campus Sites, Dr. Phyllis Fleming-Banks, says that, “The UWI Open Campus Anguilla is pleased to continue the collaboration with the Department of Social Development in recognition of its important role, as well as its continued support for the growing number of social work students at The UWI Open Campus.”
As part of the collaboration, The UWI Open Campus Anguilla, once again collected a donation towards the Department’s Foster/Alternative Care Programme during the March 8th International Women’s Day Celebration.
The general public, all workers and students in the helping professions are invited to attend and participate in this forum on the Child Protection Act scheduled for Thursday, March 17, 2022 at the Orealia Kelly Primary School Auditorium at 5:00 p.m.
