On Wednesday 16 February 2022, Her Excellency the Governor chaired the first meeting of the recently established National Security Council (NSC). The Premier, Minister for Home Affairs, Attorney General, Commissioner of Police and Deputy Governor in his capacity as chair of the National Civil Aviation & Maritime Security Committee attended.
The NSC is a consultative forum established to support the Governor in the execution of her duties to ensure sufficient focus and join up across relevant entities on issues concerning crime and border security. At its first meeting the NSC discussed current threats to Anguilla’s security and the extent to which existing measures address these threats. These risks to national security include crime, including the use of firearms; illegal entry of people and contraband; natural and other disasters; and cybersecurity. Aviation and regulatory compliance and our maritime adherence to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) standards was also considered.
