The Ministry and Department of Education announces the appointment of the new Board of Governors for a Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School (ALHCS).
The Board appointees are as follows: Ms. Carencia Rouse – Chair, Ms. Eva Hodge – Deputy Chair, Ms. Krystie Webster – Secretary, Bishop Dr. Samuel Daniel – Member, Ms. Joann Snagg – Member, Mr. Kevin Hawley – Member, Ms. Vanessa Crof t- Member, Master Sekani Reid – Member, and Mrs. Rita Celestine-Carty – Member (ex officio).
The Board will govern for a period of three years with effect from 20th day of September, 2021.
The Ministry and Department of Education congratulate the Board of Governors on their appointments and thank them for their willingness to serve in the interest of Anguilla’s children.
CURICULUM VITAE OF BOARD MEMBERS
Ms. Carencia Rouse
Chair; National Interest: Environmental Governance and Gender Affairs
Ms. Carencia Rouse is a professional in the field of Geography and Environmental Governance. Having been named Island Scholar in 2011, Ms. Rouse attended Carleton University where she successfully pursued an Honours degree in Environmental Studies with a Minor in Women’s and Gender Studies. In 2016, Ms. Rouse was awarded a Chevening Scholarship through which she studied at and graduated from, the University of Oxford with a Master of Science in Nature, Society and Environmental Governance. Ms. Rouse now serves as the Director of Environment within the Department of Natural Resources of the Government of Anguilla.
Ms. Rouse believes that a contextualiSed and targeted approach to education provides a gateway to an improved quality of life. In her capacity as the Chair of the ALHCS Board of Governors, Ms. Rouse is committed to applying her strategic planning experience as a voluntary contribution to the transformation of secondary education in Anguilla.
Ms. Eva Hodge
Deputy Chair; Staff Representative
Aspirations of establishing a career in the Technical field have always existed for this dynamic individual. It was therefore no surprise when Eva opted to pursue a Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical Engineering. Upon completion in 2008, the decision to enter the teaching arena to pioneer a programME in this field resulted in some of her proudest and most rewarding moments. Consequently, in 2012, Eva decided to further establish herself in education by pursuing a Post Graduate Diploma in Education. Since then, she was appointed Head of the Technical Studies Department in 2017 where she has served successfully for over four years.
Eva Hodge is a prime example of what hard work and dedication can produce. From a young age, leadership has been an integral part of her life, both on a personal and professional level. Coupled with leadership abilities is a love for education which prompted her to step outside of her comfort zone and embrace the role of Deputy Chair of the Board of Governors. She is rather excited about this role and intends to do her very best. Ultimately, it is her goal to make education an integral part of her existence regardless of where life may take her.
Ms. Krystie Webster:
Secretary; Community Development
Ms. Webster began her teaching career in 2009, as an Uncertified Teacher at the Morris Vanterpool Primary School. With her passion for teaching ignited, she enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education Programme at the University of the Virgin Islands – a period which solidified her leadership potential through a myriad of volunteer, and employment opportunities.
Upon graduation, she served as a Graduate Teacher at the Adrian T. Hazell Primary School before enrolling in the Master of Education – Instructional Leadership and Academic Curriculum programme at the University of Oklahoma in 2015. Post-graduation, she served briefly as a Graduate Teacher at Lockhart Elementary School (USVI), before accepting a Graduate Teacher position at the Orealia Kelly Primary School in 2017.
Beyond the classroom, Ms. Webster serves as Teacher Representative of the OKPS – PTA, Member of the OKPS Senior Management Team, Head Acolyte at the St. Augustine’s Anglican Church, Youth Coordinator, and Vestry member of The Parish of St. Mary with St. Augustine and St. Andrew, Anguilla. Ms. Webster’s vision for Education is one where teachers enter the profession as a result of passion, where their efforts are appreciated, and they are made to feel respected.
Bishop Dr. Samuel Daniel:
Member; Religious Community
Bishop Dr. Samuel Daniel is a Christian Counselling Psychologist, Life Coach and author. He is a seasoned educator who lectured in the UWI moderated Teacher Training programmes for over 20 years, served as Head of Special Educational Needs Department for 7 years at the Albena Lake Hodge Comprehensive School and Head of Counselling Department for over 10 years. Dr. Daniel also serves as District Overseer of two congregations and one mission on the island.
Ms. Joann Snagg:
Member; Business Interest
Joann Snagg is a passionate educator with over a decade of experience in the teaching profession as a certified graduate teacher and private tutor. She is currently a teacher at the Adrian T. Hazell Primary school where she holds the post of Literacy Coordinator and is a member of the school’s senior management team.
Her academic achievements and career path have been fueled by her passion for and desire to implement meaningful change in Anguilla’s education system. In 2009, she graduated from Middlesex University in London with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education with English Literature. Later, in 2013, she earned an Associate’s degree in Teacher Education, Primary Level, from the University of the West Indies; and in 2020, as a prestigious Chevening Scholar, pursued a Master’s degree in Policy Studies in Education at the Institute of Education, University College London.
Joann is a very active member of her church and has been a part of its youth group’s leadership for more than 15 years. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, writing, singing, watching series and movies, conversing with family and friends and mentoring young persons. She is always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need of assistance, be it academically, professionally or personally. It is her belief that learning is a lifelong journey and strives to better herself in all spheres whenever the opportunity is presented. One of her favourite Chinese proverbs states, “If you are planning for a year, sow rice; if you are planning for a decade, plant trees; if you are planning for a lifetime, educate people.”
Mr. Kevin Hawley:
Member; Parent Representative
Mr. Kevin R. Hawley is a former graduate of the Albena Lake Hodge Comprehensive School and sixth form. Mr. Hawley holds the position of Assistant Manager-Finance at the National Commercial Bank of Anguilla (NCBA) and has been involved in banking and finance for over twenty (20) years. Mr. Hawley is the 1st Vice President of the Anguilla Football Association and Co-Founder/Academy Director of Aces Football Academy. Mr. Hawley has made significant contributions to sports over the past thirty years at local, regional and international level in the area of track and field, cricket and football.
Mr. Hawley is family-oriented and has been married for over 18 years. Kevin has a whole-hearted passion for working with young people and has been actively involved in mentoring and counselling for over 20 years. Mr. Hawley is also a local Minister at World Harvest Assembly church where he attends. Mr. Hawley has a Diploma Certification in Accounting and Managing People. He is also a student member at the Association of Certified Chartered Accounts and currently has an ACCA Level 1 qualification.
Ms. Vanessa Croft:
Member; Educational Expert
Vanessa Croft holds a B.Ed in English Literature and an MA in English Language from the University of the West Indies. An avid writer, her poetry has been published in Where I See The Sun: an Anthology of Anguillian poetry. She is a long time winner of the Malliouhana Poetry Competition with numerous first prize placings for Spoken Word from 2007 to 2018. In 2017, she represented the literary arts in Anguilla as a Spoken Word poet at CARIFESTA in Barbados. Vanessa also spoke as a panelist at the 2018 Anguilla Literary Arts Festival where she presented her experience running a blog. In 2018, Vanessa received the National Youth Award for Outstanding Performance in the Literary Arts. She was nominated at the same ceremony for Recognition in Volunteerism for her work teaching Literature to inmates at Her Majesty’s Prison as well as her pioneer efforts in promoting reading for pleasure amongst adolescents.
In 2019, Vanessa once again represented Anguilla at CARIFESTA in Trinidad. The Kweli Journal published Vanessa’s short story “Secret in the Mangoes” in April 2020. In that same year, Vanessa was recognised as a Women’s Week Honouree for her work as an activist. In 2021, Vanessa received a Catapult Caribbean Arts grant for her creative writing and had an article published in the online parenting lifestyle magazine Her View From Home. Vanessa most recently received the first-place prize in the adult category for the National Anguillian Non-Fiction Writing competition.
Vanessa currently teaches Middle School English and Humanities at the Omololu International School where she is the coordinator of Secondary Studies. She has also lectured at the Anguilla Community College and facilitated a course in Creative Writing at the University of the West Indies, Open Campus. In her spare time, she runs her lifestyle blog VanessaExplainsItAll.com.
Master Sekani Reid:
Member; Student Representative
Sekani Reid is a Fifth Form Student at the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School (ALHCS). He is currently the President of the ALHCS Student Council. He is a member of the school’s Environmental Club and the Literary and Debating Society. He enjoys a variety of activities such as tennis, playing guitar, writing poetry, debating and cooking.
