Last week, Dr. Aisha Andrewin, Chief Medical Officer with the Anguilla Health Authority, stated that the variant of concern is still Omicron which accounts for 93.3% of the covid cases reported globally, and 75% of the covid cases reported in Anguilla.
She observed that, “although we are seeing some glimmers of hope [with a steady decrease in reported cases in Anguilla], the acute phase of the pandemic is not over. We are still looking at vaccination coverage as the main way to get us towards normalcy.”
This week, Permanent Secretary with responsibility for Health, Mr. Foster Rogers, indicated that “about 700 paediatric doses of the Pfizer vaccine should have arrived on island for distribution to children ages 5-11.”
He noted that a vaccine schedule will be developed for eligible children to receive the Pfizer vaccine at the primary schools and also at the polyclinics. The Ministry of Health urged parents to register their eligible children to receive the vaccine, and strongly encouraged all other eligible groups to participate in the ongoing vaccine initiative while doses of the vaccine are still available to persons on Anguilla.
Speaking at the Government’s weekly press briefing on Monday, February 14, the Premier, Dr. Ellis Webster, stressed the importance of having as many persons as possible vaccinated on Anguilla. He noted: “The more people we can get vaccinated in Anguilla, the better it is that we can open up the country more, get rid of the restrictions, decrease the need for quarantine and the need to have to apply to come in to Anguilla.
“We are moving in the right direction, and I would like to stress that vaccination is our best chance at a return to normalcy. These are all steps that we want to take, but it is dependent upon you, the people, and we still feel that vaccine is the best way to move in that direction.”
