Omicron appears to be the dominant variant responsible for new cases of the COVID-19 virus on Anguilla.

Speaking at the Government’s weekly press conference on Monday, January 24, 2022, Chief Medical Office, Dr. Aisha Andrewin, reported: “Of the last nine samples that were sent to the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) for sequencing, all were shown to be positive for Omicron – five were linked to local transmission and four were imported cases.”

She also observed that the World Health Organisation (WHO) is reporting an increase in COVID-19 cases, globally, although the increase is not as dramatic as it has been reported in previous weeks. She noted that “in the past, there had been increases of up to 55% per week. However, the last epidemiology report has shown a much smaller increase of 20%, with COVID-19-related deaths plateauing.”

The Ministry of Health continues to encourage persons to get vaccinated, as the scientific evidence supports the theory that vaccination provides the best protection against disease, hospitalisation, and death caused by the COVID-19 SARS-CoV2 virus. This is especially true for persons in vulnerable groups – the unvaccinated, persons age 55-91, and those with underlying health conditions – such as diabetes, hypertension, cancer, etc.
