The Valley, Anguilla – On 1 and 2 December 2021, the Anguilla Financial Services Commission hosted its first virtually-held annual Anguilla FinTech and Compliance Conference. Over 100 attendees were able to tune into the Conference from across the world. The Commission was especially delighted to provide the CAPE Financial Services students, from the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School, the opportunity to attend the Conference – having adopted this class in 2018.
The Conference featured over 25 presenters and 14 sessions on various Compliance and FinTech-related topics. The Conference’s themes, “Adding Value: Unity, Strength and Endurance – Anguilla’s AML/CFT Framework” and “Innovating Strength, Unity and Endurance through FinTech”, were a nod to Anguilla’s national motto. The two-day conference began with welcome remarks delivered by Acting Governor, Perin Bradley.
On Day 1 of the Conference, the Commission’s Director, Ms Tina Bryan, discussed the necessary changes to Anguilla’s regulatory framework to allow a clear space for innovation and technologically forward-looking financial services while adhering to international standards. Attendees also received updates from the Government of Anguilla and the Caribbean Financial Action Task Force, and benefitted from presentations on Meaningful Risk Assessments, Cryptocurrency and International Cooperation. Day 1 closed with an insightful discussion on Regulation for the 21st Century by panellists, Ms Charonay Carty, Senior Regulator, Anguilla Financial Services Commission and Ms Francine Felicien, Analyst, Eastern Caribbean Securities Regulatory Commission, and moderated by Mrs Sandra Edun-Watler, Head of Compliance and Reporting Services, Mourant.
Starting off Day 2, Chairman of the Commission, Mr Ralph Hodge, in his welcome remarks, advocated for the solidarity between the regulator and the regulated to forge Anguilla’s future as a leader in innovative financial services solutions.
Day 2 was delivered in collaboration with the Global Impact FinTech (GIFT) Forum, a global non-profit FinTech think tank with top ecosystem leaders and policymakers from 65 countries across all regions. GIFT facilitated two panel discussions and one presentation – providing global perspectives on FinTech, Regulation and Innovation, including Central Bank Digital Currencies, and insights into how small international financial centres level up on innovation. The Commission’s Deputy Director, Ms Simone Martin, and Accrue’s, Founder, Benoît Brookens III, discussed Artificial Intelligence and Anguilla and its future utility for SupTech and FinTech players.
The Commission expressed its gratitude to the 2021 Anguilla FinTech and Compliance Conference partners: Governor’s Office, Anguilla; Government of Anguilla; Financial Intelligence Unit, Anguilla; Anguilla Compliance Association; Caribbean Financial Action Task Force; Eastern Caribbean Securities Regulatory Commission; Global Impact FinTech (GIFT); Blockchain Intelligence Group and Accrue.
