As the human, economic and social toll from the coronavirus pandemic continues to unfold, UNICEF has provided critical hygiene and prevention supplies to White Cedar Children’s Home – and to Zenaida Haven Juvenile Rehabilitation Centre. UNICEF continues to be an important partner to the Ministry of Social Development & Education (MSDE) in improving the quality of life for our nation’s children. UNICEF donated these supplies in support of strengthening safe operating environments for vulnerable children at this critical time. While we work to mitigate these risks, children living in institutions are at greater risk of contracting COVID. The hygienic supplies donated by UNICEF will assist in keeping these environments safe.
White Cedar Children’s Home, operated by the Department of Social Development, is a transitional residential facility for children in need of care and protection. The home provides a therapeutic environment where children can thrive. Zenaida Haven Juvenile Residential facility, operated by the Department of Probation, is a home for boys in conflict with the law who are between the ages of 12 and 17. The facility aims to rehabilitate and to reintegrate children in conflict with the law back into the community.
UNICEF is an organisation, mandated by the United Nations General Assembly, to advocate for the protection of children’s rights, to help meet their basic needs and to expand their opportunities to reach their full potential. UNICEF works in over 190 countries and territories to save children’s lives, to defend their rights, and to help them fulfil their potential, from early childhood through adolescence. The MSDE is grateful to UNICEF for their continued support.
