Anguillian students have been praised for their CXC performance this year which shows an increase in passes when compared with 2020 and 2019. The Ministry of Education has issued a statement saying they had performed commendably despite many challenges.
Following is the statement issued by the Ministry of Education on the June/July 2021 CXC results: The Ministry of Education congratulates students of the Albena Lake Hodge Comprehensive School (ALHCS) on their success in the June/July 2021 CXC examinations as well as teachers, parents and all other partners who would have supported them along the way. Despite the many challenges this last year has presented, our students performed commendably.
Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC)
In June/July 2021, 172 candidates from the Albena Lake Hodge Comprehensive School wrote the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) examination for the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) at the Technical and General Proficiencies. There were 1069 subject entries of which 956 were at the General Proficiency and 113 at the Technical Proficiency. This year registered a slight increase in candidate entries and a decrease in subject entries over last year. In July/August 2020, there were 168 candidate entries and 1122 subject entries.
Those subjects offered at Technical Proficiency were Textiles, Clothing and Fashion, Family and Resource Management, Food Nutrition and Health, Technical Drawing, Industrial Technology Electrical and Electronics, Industrial Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Technology Building and Furniture. The Caribbean Examinations Council at the CSEC level offers thirty-three subjects. Students at the Albena Lake Hodge Comprehensive School entered for 32 of these subjects. Of the 32 subject areas examined, performance improved in 15 subjects, declined in 7 subjects and remained the same in 9 subjects.
The performance of candidates in the CSEC June/July 2021 examinations showed an increase when compared to that of 2020 and 2019. Overall eighty two percent (82%) of the subject entries presented for General and Technical proficiencies achieved grades I to III compared with 76% in 2020; and 74% in 2019. The statistics show that 63% of the candidates achieved acceptable grades in four or more subjects. This statistic compares to 61% in 2020 and 57% in the previous year 2019. This year there were 95 candidates achieving acceptable grades in five or more subjects. In 2020 and 2019 there were 84 candidates achieving acceptable grades in five or more subjects. In addition, 55 of these candidates achieved acceptable grades in both English A and Mathematics. This compares to 66 candidates in 2020 and 51 candidates in 2019.
There was an improvement in the level of grade achievement. Approximately 52% of the subject entries achieved grades 1 and 2. In 2020 this statistic was 52% and in 2019, 43% of the subject entries achieved grades 1 and 2. Of particular note, there were substantially fewer candidates achieving Grades 4, 5 and 6.
Caribbean Certificate of Secondary Level Competence (CCSLC)
The Albena Lake -Hodge Comprehensive School this year registered an increase in both the number of candidate entries and the number of subject entries for the Caribbean Certificate of Secondary Level Competence (CCSLC) programme. Three hundred thirty-eight (388 ) candidates were entered with 740 subject entries with 669 of those entries completed.
In 2020, there were 381 candidate entries and 625 subject entries with 592 entries completed. This year 42% of the subject entries achieved the level of mastery. In 2020, 37% of the subject entries achieved the level of mastery, compared with 42% in 2019.
Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations (CAPE)
In June/July 2021, a total of 122 candidates in Upper and Lower Six at the Albena Lake Hodge Comprehensive School wrote subjects at the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency level. There were 557 subject entries. This year registered a decrease in candidate entries but an increase in subject entries over last year. In July/August 2020, there were 130 candidate entries and 553 subject entries. In May/June 2019, there were 151 candidates and 637 subject entries. The Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) offers 67 Units in 35 subjects at this level. At the Albena Lake Hodge Comprehensive School a total of 48 Units (25 Unit 1 courses and 23 Unit 2 courses) in 31 subjects were offered in 2021
The overall performance of candidates in the CAPE June/July 2021 examinations showed a slight decline of 1% when compared to that of 2020. Eighty six percent (86%) of the subject entries presented achieved Grades I to V compared with 87% in 2020.. Of the 48 Units examined, performance improved in 10 units, declined in 12 units and remained the same in 17 units. Thirty-seven percent of the subject entries achieved grades 1 -3 compared to 46% in 2020; 43% in 2019. Results show that 49% of the subject entries achieved grades IV and V. This statistic was 41% in 2020 and 2019. In addition, 14% of the subject entries achieved unacceptable grades VI and VII up from 13% in 2020 but down from 16% in 2019. In 33 of the 48 Units none of the candidates achieved Grade 1. These statistics indicate that there is still a critical need to raise the level of grade achievement.
The Ministry of Education commends all students who sat CXC examinations.
