As part of their commitment to learning, for all children of Anguilla, the Ministry and Department of Education joined in sponsoring an Art Summer Camp for special needs children from across the island – this week.
The conductor of the camp is Ms. Emily Garlick, a graduate artist of Anni Art Studio in Anguilla who now operates her own Paint Studio at Shoal Bay. She is being assisted in teaching the young children by Ms. Nakieta Adams, a teacher at the Morris Vanterpool Primary School.
“The week-long art camp is sponsored by the Government of Anguilla, from 9 am to 12 noon, and my studio is offering the children something that the Ministry and Department of Education do not have this summer,” Ms. Garlick explained. “We are going to be doing some creative vision painting, engaging the children visually, and providing some fun for the twelve of them who are at different levels.”
The Ministry of Education was represented at the opening day of the summer camp on Monday, July 26, by Mrs. Tracelyn Hamilton, Education Officer, Multi-Professional Services. Commenting on the event, she said: “This week, the Ministry and Department of Education decided to provide an opportunity for children, with social education needs, to be involved in a summer camp.
“This art camp was created especially for them because we know that there will be another camp coming up in August for other children – and the chances for our children, with special needs to attend it, would be slim. As a result, the Ministry and Department partnered with Paint Studio to ensure that our children have an opportunity, during the summer, to participate in something like this.”
Mrs. Hamilton added: “The children are from all of our special education centres.” She was grateful to Ms. Garlick and Ms. Adams for coming forward to conduct the Summer Art Camp.
