The late Mr. Hubert Hughes, who won nine of the ten elections as the Representative of Road South, over the years, was celebrated in that constituency on Tuesday evening, June 15.
The celebration, which took the form of a religious and social event, with tributes in music and song, was held on the South Hill community field.
Methodist Minister, Rev. Wilmoth Hodge, delivered an address during which he acknowledged the presence of Mrs. Norma Hughes, widow of the former Chief Minister, and other members of his family, and sought to comfort them. He thanked the departed leader “for his life of service to Anguilla -and in particular to the people of Blowing Point and South Hill.”
He told the gathering: “The best tribute that we can give to Mr. Hughes is the spirit of unity. The best tribute we can give him is not mere words, but a commitment to build up one another in love rather than to tear each other down. Therefore, let us love and comfort one another. Let us give ourselves to the good of others, even as Christ gave himself for us and for the world.”
The beloved and highly-regarded preacher, from West End, added: “May you continue to experience God’s presence at this trying time in your lives; and may the soul of Mr. Hubert Benjamin Hughes, and the souls of all the faithful departed, live on in the eternal presence of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.”
Rev. Hodge’s stirring address was followed by tributes from a number of persons from the Blowing Point and South Hill community, as well as others, including Ministers of Government, from elsewhere in Anguilla.
Others who participated in the event were Pastor Hugo Brooks of World Church Assembly, who delivered one of the opening prayers; Roots Bingi, the Rastafarian drummers; and Mr. Andrew Niles, a Methodist Churchman and a member of the South Hill community, who chaired the proceedings.
