A Culture & Arts Calendar, 2021-2022, has now been produced and circulated by the Department of Youth & Culture, one of the most active community outreach and creative divisions of the Government of Anguilla.
Aptly illustrated with photographs by Lawrence Stott, Ivor Hodge, The Anguillian newspaper, Star Media, Quest, the Anguilla Archaeological and Historical Society and others (not acknowledged) the calendar is a work of art and beauty. It also captures some historic and otherwise noted cultural scenes on the island.
Of particular interest also, are the writings of noted Anguillian historian, Mr. Colville Petty. There are also articles by a number of other writers – all in one way or another recount some of the cultural stories of the island, as seen through their own eyes or passed down from generation to generation.
Minster of Social Development and Education, Ms. Dee-Ann Kentish-Rogers, said about the calendar: “This edition of our Culture and Arts calendar, under the theme ‘Know Ya Culture’, is dedicated to a people of independent thought and fearless spirit! To a people who are vibrant, dynamic and engaging, to a people who believe in strength, in community, and who, in the face of adversity, are resilient! This calendar reminds us that we must hold steadfast to what makes us distinctly Anguillian!”
Permanent Secretary, Social Development an Education, Dr. Bonnie Richardson-Lake, wrote: “I would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to the Department of Youth Culture for producing this excellent publication showcasing our unique culture. To those who contributed to this inspiring production, your role in building cultural awareness has not gone unnoticed. I encourage everyone who has the opportunity, to peruse this year’s calendar. The 2021-2022 Calendar really inspires you to ‘Know Ya Culture.’”
Director of the Department of Youth and Culture, Ms. Avon Carty, stated: “We hope that as you immerse yourself in the stories, and enjoy the images that we have shared with you, something will resonate. If you grew up in Anguilla, or the wider Caribbean, may you be filled with nostalgia and fond memories of bygone days and hope for tomorrow. If you are a more recent resident from farther afield, who has chosen to make Anguilla your home, or if you are one of our welcomed guests, we hope you enjoy this small peek into our Anguillian culture – and your interest to learn more about us is piqued.”
