Deputy Principal of Campus A, Mr. Perry Richardson, and Deputy Principal of Campus B, Mrs. Charmaine Rey-Richardson, delightfully expressed their satisfaction with the hardworking achievers.

In speaking with The Anguillian newspaper during the Honour Roll display last Thursday, the school’s Principal, Mrs. Rita Celestine Carty, gave a brief synopsis of the programme: “The Albena Lake Hodge Comprehensive School’s Honour Roll has two levels, namely the Principal’s List and the Deputy Principal’s List,” she explained. A student who qualifies for the Principal’s List would have achieved an ‘A’ in all of their subjects, and that can be a total of 9 to 13 subjects, depending on which level of the school the student is at. This means that if a student attains 80% and above in all of his or her subjects, he or she would be on the Principal’s List.

“Students who achieve an 80% average of all their grades would be on the Deputy Principal’s List. This means that if, for example, a student gains a 90% in one subject and a 70% in another, he or she would attain an 80% average for those two subjects, and would be qualified for the Deputy Principal’s List if a similar trend is followed throughout all subjects.”

She further explained that the school has taken the decision to publish the names and pictures of the achievers so that they can share more widely with the community what the students are capable of accomplishing. “Amidst the negative stories that might come out of the school we want to make the public aware that many good things happen here. Our students are focused on achieving excellent levels of recognition,” she stressed.

As a matter of fact, she referred to a rewarding event where many ALHCS’s students have been recognized regionally on the Regional Merit List for CXC (Caribbean Examination Council). “Some of our students have topped the whole Caribbean region with exceptional academic performance in several subjects. Many of them have achieved coveted positions among the top ten students of the region,” she said gleefully.

Asked how the students view the Honour Roll programme and how they are influenced by it, Mrs. Carty responded: “Many of the students count it as a rewarding experience. Still, there are some students who would not realize that they have made the Honour Roll until they are informed by their head-of-year teacher. But we are doing our best to sensitize them to check their report cards carefully and inform themselves of their achievements before we actually celebrate them. Making them aware of their merits and their abilities can help them to set goals towards reaching the Honour Roll standards.”

She mentioned that the Honour Roll Programme had been ongoing for several decades, and she expressed gratitude to Paradise Cove Hotel which has provided the high achievers with sumptuous dinners over many years.
