In the previous edition of The Anguillian newspaper, the President of the Sandy Ground Committee, Patricia Hodge, wrote a letter to Premier Dr. Ellis Webster asking for information about the proposed marina/hotel project there.
The committee is opposed to a yacht marina at Sandy Ground. Its members and other persons made their positions clear at a recent town hall meeting and in letters and other documents to media houses in Anguilla.
The Government attended that meeting, but said very little about the project, saying only that discussions were continuing with the developers; a number of companies had shown interest in the project; and that an environmental impact assessment was in course of preparation.
The meeting was also informed that the Government would be inclined to give its approval to the project if the environmental impact study found that the development would not pose any problem to the Sandy Ground/Road Bay area. Since then, nothing more was heard about the project, prompting the inquiring letter from the President of the Sandy Ground Committee.
During the meeting, between the Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Government, on Wednesday, March 3, the matter about the Sandy Ground Marina/Hotel Project came up for discussion.
Commenting on the issue, Premier Webster gave no fresh information about the project. “It is a definitive agreement that was signed on June 3rd, 2020, and permission was given for a grand marina and resort project at Sandy Ground Pond,” he said.
“At this point, we are still talking with the developers in terms of the environmental social impact assessment. There are seven companies that were provided…to determine which one can do the scope of work that is necessary. And we have said that if there is a favourable environment impact assessment, we would be [in favour] of the project.”
