The month of March is Social Work Month, and in Anguilla the Department of Social Development observed Social Workers Weeks from March 13th to March 18th.
As part of the activities, the Department hosted a soup luncheon on Friday, March 18th, for a number of persons. A former employee of the Department, Mr. James Carty initiated the luncheon. It was served as a feature of Social Workers week over a number of years.
Mr. Frankie Smith, Senior Community Development and Welfare Officer, said: “When we were thinking about the week of activities, Mr. Carty decided that he wanted to cook some soup for those who might be in need of a good lunch, and for any person in our clientele. He also decided to fund the meal, while we were discussing our source of funds. Naturally, Mr. Carty has a knack for cooking, and loves to provide food for the needy as well.”
The Anguillian witnessed the lunch distribution and spoke with Mr. Carty: “I wanted to do this in order to show a different side of social workers to the public,” he said. “I think there are many in the public who see us as just officials who want to interfere in their business. So I decided that we should give them a lunch treat. We want people to come here and realize that this office is not just the typical welfare. You can come at this time and get a good bowl of soup.”
