The partners for the Darwin Plus funded project, titled “Improving Coastal Ecosystem Resiliency on Climate Change in Anguilla”, joined hands with members of the general public and cleaned up the Cove Pond on Tuesday, 2nd February, 2021. The initiative was in recognition of World Wetlands Day, which was commemorated in 1971, with the signing of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands.
Following Hurricane Irma in 2017, Cove Pond has been severely impacted with debris including galvanize, vehicle parts, and other material which are very hazardous to the ecosystem.
It was therefore imperative to remove these items with the aim of restoring and protecting the coastal ecosystems of Anguilla. On Tuesday, 2nd February, 2021 the Management and staff of the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the Anguilla National Trust (ANT), and members of the public, collectively embarked on this activity at Cove Pond. This collaborative activity was also geared at sensitising the public on the ecological importance of Anguilla’s wetlands, while observing World Wetlands Day.
We would like to express sincere appreciation to all persons who participated in making this clean up activity a success. We do look forward for your continued support in improving Anguilla’s Coastal Ecosystems.
The Improving Coastal Ecosystem Resiliency Project is a collaboration among the Department of Disaster Management (DDM), Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and Anguilla National Trust (ANT).
