Following the graduation of a record number of online students for 2020, the UWI has now welcomed its newest cohort with the hosting of an Orientation/Meet & Greet Session on Tuesday, January 12, 2021. The session was held at the UWI Open Campus Site at Pope Hill. This face-to-face orientation was in addition to the online orientation the new cohort completed previously to introduce them to the University – and to ensure they understand the rudiments of beginning and getting through their online programmes.
Among those on hand to welcome and offer support to the new students were Deputy Chair of the Guild of Students, Ms. Melissa Harrigan; Site Staff, Ms. Arlene Browne-Richardson and Ms. Patricia Bryan; and Manager of the British Overseas Territories Open Campus Sites, Dr. Phyllis Fleming- Banks. The Orientation took the form of giving relevant information to the new students about expectations and how to stay on course with their studies.
In her congratulatory remarks, Dr. Fleming-Banks thanked and commended the new students for choosing The UWI – a university that is well-placed in the top four percent of universities in the world. “Not only are you part of a distinguished institution that will provide you with a relevant, world-class education. You have also chosen a University that offers you the flexibility of achieving your goals at a fraction of external costs, without leaving your family or your jobs,” she said.
According to Dr. Fleming-Banks, the UWI Open Campus Anguilla Site is pleased that, in addition to its more mature students, the local arm of the University continues to see an increasing number of younger students, who are taking advantage of the opportunity to earn their degrees without incurring the huge loans normally associated with tertiary education. A Bachelor’s Degree from start to finish at the UWI Open Campus is about US$11,000.00, while Master’s Degrees cost about US$8,000.00 and Doctoral programmes average US$20,000.00.
Semester Two 2020/2021 at the UWI Open Campus began on January 6, 2021 with registration – and the new students officially began the semester on January 17, 2021. The local, face-to-face, continuing and professional development programmes, will begin during the first week of February.
In addition to the orientation held earlier this month, the UWI Open Campus is preparing for its 2020 Graduate Recognition Ceremony on Thursday, January 28, 2021, at the Church of God (Holiness) in Pope Hill at 4:00 p.m.
