An Anguillian frontline worker, in New York, who died from the coronavirus, “gave his life for others,” Anguilla’s Premier, Dr. Ellis Webster, has said.

Well-acquainted with the late Herbert ‘Dr. Tony’ Stoddard, formerly of The White Hill, the Premier said Anguilla was saddened by his death and that his own sorrow was immense.
Premier Webster went on radio and issued a written statement to the rest of the media, on Wednesday, January 20, expressing his grief.

“Anguilla is saddened by the death of a son of the soil, Herbert ‘Dr. Tony’ who passed away in New York on January 19, 2021, after battling with the Covid-19 disease,” he stated. “The Anguillian community in New York has lost a shining light. Anguilla has lost an Ambassador.”

Premier Webster continued: “Herbert cared about people and assisted, motivated and inspired us all. His passion was limitless and infectious and his work ethic impeccable and commendable. He unselfishly committed himself and his resources to any worthy cause.

“Herbert worked in New York as a frontline worker in the hospital and the prison, providing medical care to his patients while putting his own health at risk. He gave his life for others.

“Herbert was instrumental in sourcing medical professionals and participating in the Health and Wellness Fairs held in Island Harbour, Anguilla. [That was] because he understood the importance of access to good healthcare and the morbidity associated with chronic diseases.

“Words cannot express my gratitude for all Herbert did for me and Anguilla. My sorrow at his death is immense and only surpassed by the sense of loss which is felt by Lanvil Harrigan, whom he considered to be his brother. Herbert’s greatest wish in life was to return home to Anguilla. I hope that he will be granted that in death.”

Premier Webster added: “On behalf of myself, my family, the Anguilla Progressive Movement, and the Government of Anguilla, I extend heartfelt condolences to his wife (Lurline), his children, brothers and sisters, relatives, friends, and Anguillian communities at home and abroad. May we all find comfort in the memories of his compassion and commitment.

“May his soul rest in eternal peace. God bless you.”
