Staff and Guild members of the UWI Open Campus Anguilla visited the ALHCS year-five Personal & Social Health Education (PSHE) classes, on Friday November 27, 2020, to formally introduce the students to the UWI Open Campus, the other UWI Campuses and the UWI Open Campus Guild of students’ chapter.
The Chair of the Student Guild and UWI STAT Ambassador, Ms. Kemoloy Murphy; Deputy Chair of the Student Guild, Ms. Melissa Harrigan; and finalist for the UWI Vice Chancellor’s 2020 Sportswoman of the Year Award, Ms. Esther Ward, accompanied the UWI staff – Mrs. Arlene Browne-Richardson, Mrs. Aunika Webster-Lake; and Manager of the British Overseas Territories Open Campus Sites, Dr. Phyllis Fleming-Banks.
The main aim was to orient students to the UWI and showcase what the University is about and what it has to offer in varying areas. Students also became aware of the five campuses of the UWI and its connections with other Universities worldwide.
The visit to the school was in keeping with the vision and mandate as set out by the Vice Chancellor of The UWI, Sir Hilary Beckles who posited, “We must go into the wider world with one voice and one identity, as a unified intellectual force to serve Caribbean peoples and the wider world.”
Manager of the British Overseas Territories Open Campus Sites, Dr. Phyllis Fleming-Banks stated, “For the past seventy years, and counting, the UWI has been dedicated to expanding and sharing knowledge, inspiring innovation, and preserving culture among other things. It is the No.1 University in the Region and in the top 4% of all Universities worldwide. We want our young people to know and appreciate that a world class education is right next door, literally and figuratively. The UWI, as we say it and know it, is onsite, online, on demand.”
The students were treated to a video entitled, UWI-Journey to the Top and provided with vital information about the University, including Continuing and Professional programmes, online degrees and the extra-curricula activities of the UWI and the admission process. There was also a question and answer period following the presentations.
The University of The West Indies Open Campus Anguilla wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to the Principal of the ALHCS, Mrs. Rita Carty, Deputy Principal Mr. Perry Richardson and the Form 5 PSHE Teachers, as well as the students, for the opportunity to visit and share with them, who are the future of this country.
