The late local businessman, Mr. Calvert Desmond (Shine) Richardson, of West End, has been highlighted for his entrepreneurial contributions to the Anguillian society, despite his physical disability.
The recognition was announced by the Department of Social Development, on Thursday, December 3, International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
“Shine”, who recently passed away, operated the Sol Gasoline Station at West End for a number of years – among other contributions to the island. He did so despite having lost one of his legs.
In highlighting him, the Department of Social Development circulated various comments about him by a number of persons as follows:
Suzie Marlin: “Shine always had a willingness to learn more and did not settle for mediocrity. He never gave up. He never let his physical challenges keep him down, and he always had the right attitude.”
Carmen Oliveras: “His positive energy was palpable, his enthusiasm was inspiring, and I feel that more people should strive to have the strength and passion he exemplified in his everyday life.”
Vanisha Proctor: “Desmond ‘Shine’ Richardson was a beacon in the community – a shining light in the right direction. He encouraged everyone whom he came into contact with, spiritually and financially. He also inspired others how to live as well-rounded individuals in the community.”

Dr. and Mrs. Franklyn Hughes: “Desmond (Shine) was a friendly person whose quiet and calm demeanour made him well-liked by everyone who came into contact with him. The unfortunate loss of his leg, at his workplace, did not prevent him from providing exemplary service to his many customers. He was very respected by the community and the island as a whole. He was very active in the sport of boat racing – and supported the boats from his area with loyalty and dedication.”

Chris Richardson: “Shine’s humility, benevolence, wit, interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence were exemplary. He was able to discuss any topic with me and be sensitive to my viewpoint. His ability to empathise without being judgemental was rather superlative.”
