On Friday, December 4, a fundraising dinner for the Anguilla Community Foundation was held at the home of Carol Baines and Dwight Chizen. It was attended by some 50 persons who braved the rain to enjoy a delicious dinner accompanied by the music of Seventh Wave Band.

The Anguilla Community Foundation was founded in 1999 and ever since has raised funds to provide scholarships. Some 35 scholarships have been granted to Anguillian students during the past ten years. Bonnie Richardson-Lake, chair of the Foundation Board, welcomed those present that included Governor Tim Foy and his wife, Premier Ellis Lorenzo Webster, Deputy Governor Perin Bradley and Minister of Home Affairs, Kenneth Hodge and his wife.

The dinner was organised by members of the Community Foundation Board and was catered by Vintours Catering, managed by Albert Lake a well-known sommelier in Anguilla. The Seventh Wave Band led by Lennox Owen on the keyboard – with Mitch Hazell playing the saxophone and Terrence Fleming on the guitar – played lively well-known tunes during the event.

The Foundation is thanking Proctors, Best Buy and Lisa Gumbs, for assisting with the cost of food for the dinner, as well as Quincy Gumbs, the St Gerard’s Catholic Church and the Seventh Wave Band for their assistance. Altogether some US$5000 was raised at the dinner that included $900 in donations from people who could not attend.

The Anguilla Community Foundation is patterned after foundations throughout the world that are created to make grants for projects in a defined community. Among the projects in Anguilla are early childhood development, music, sports, educational opportunities for youth, cultivation of the arts, senior citizens’ homes and preservation of the environment. Since its inception the Anguilla Community Foundation has distributed over US$460,000 in grants – and built endowed funds of more than US$750,000 where only the investment earnings are ever spent.
