A three-day training session for teachers, outside the normal educational curriculum, was conducted this week under the auspices of the Anguilla Teachers’ Union.
Speaking at the Teachers’ Resource Centre, where the training was held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, November 10-12, President of the Teachers’ Union, Ms Sherise Gumbs, said:
“This training is piggy-backing from one that was done two weeks ago by the Caribbean Union of Teachers, dubbed ‘Leadership in times of crisis.’ The decision was taken to extend the training to more members. Accordingly, units in the different Caribbean islands were requested to organise a workshop so that many more teachers can benefit from the training.
“The Anguilla Teachers’ Union is therefore working in collaboration with the Caribbean Union of Teachers’ Status of Women Committee to put on this training, ‘Leadership in times of crisis.’. We have three days of five sessions: One on Tuesday by Dr. Olufunmike Banks-Devonish and Lisa Rey entitled: ‘Fitness, mental health and well-being’; Wednesday: ‘Embracing technology, diversity and inclusion’ by Teacher Wendy Lawrence and Teacher Estelle Carter; and Thursday: ‘Managing our finances in times of crisis’ by the Chief Executive Officer of the National Commercial Bank of Anguilla, Ms. Sharmaine Francois.”
Asked how she saw the training of importance to the female teachers in attendance, the Anguilla Teachers’ Union President commented: “This training is very timely especially now with the Covid-19 pandemic whereby life has become very fluid. We are hoping that this training will help the teachers to find some solid ground in these times – and enable them to continue to play their role in the development of our children.”
Just before the commencement of the training, Chief Education Officer, Mr. Bren Romney, commended the Teachers’ Union for organising the training and offered his best wishes to the participants and those conducting the sessions.
