The Corporate Development Department of the Royal Anguilla Police Force has released the crime statistics for the third quarter of 2020 (Jan – Sept). The release has also showed a comparison of its crime figures for the same period in 2018 and 2019 respectively.
The number of actual crimes reported in 2020 have been reduced by 9% in comparison to 2019, and 32 % in 2018 (down from 635 to 433 crimes in 2018, and from 476 to 433 2019). Additionally, the reduction between 2018 and 2019 was 25% for the same period and the brought to justice outcome in 2018, 2019 and 2020 amounted to 27%, 46% and 42% respectively.
During the third quarter, there has been a reduction in all crimes. Despite the challenges of Covid 19, the overall crime performance is good for the period i.e. (94% detection in serious crimes and 79% detection in all crimes). Acquisitive crimes have seen an increase by 24% for the same period 2019 (138 crimes in 2019 and 171 crimes in 2020 for the same period). Burglary remains a high priority crime with seventeen (17) crimes more than the same period in 2019.
Figures for serious crime show that there was a decrease in serious crimes reported for the same period in 2019 by 7%. The RAPF continues to make gun crimes a priority and, as such, has had several successes in seizures of firearms and ammunition. Firearms recovered resulted in a 22% increase over the same period for the previous year, hence supporting our ambitions in keeping Anguilla safe.
