The Tourism Education Unit of the Department of Education (DoE) is pleased to announce the launch of the 2020 Hello Tourist Programme with the Grade Six classes of the six public Primary Schools and the Omolulu International School.
The programme was launched during the last week of September to coincide with the commemoration of World Tourism Day on September 26th through a series of talks to the Grade Sixers by the Tourism Education Coordinator(TEC), Mrs. Candis Niles, who spoke with the students about their role as members of the future work force of Anguilla. She highlighted the challenges of working in an increasingly corporate Tourism and Hospitality work environment, and focused on the importance of the ASKE Principles, being Attitude, Skills, Knowledge and Experience, for success in the highly competitive global labour market.
The second phase of the programme featured site visits by each Grade Six class to the Made in AXA (MIAXA) Centre and the Anguilla Arts and Craft (AAC) Centre during the weeks of October 15 to November 6th. OKPS and VPS both visited the Anguilla Arts and Craft (AAC) Centre on October 23rd, while AARPS visited the Made in AXA (MIAXA) Centre on October 15th, and MVPS, VVPS and ATHPS also visited the MIAXA Centre on October 26th. During the visits students were given the opportunity to see the work of various local artists on display at both centres. They also had the opportunity to interact with some of the artists, and to learn about possibilities for entrepreneurship development through the arts. Students expressed their enjoyment of the experience. It was the first time that most of them had visited either centre, and they were thrilled by the products on display. Many students planned to return to make purchases, and expressed the desire to have their own work displayed at the centres.
During Phase Three of the programme, students will be engaging in the realisation of an Individual Project focused on personal skills and creativity, and in Phase Four, classes will work together to create a group project which focuses on the Environment and Conservation. Prizes will be awarded for both categories of Projects.
The Department of Education’s Tourism Unit extends special thanks to Centre Managers, Miss Malesia Carty of the MIAXA Centre and Mrs. Melsadis Fleming of the AAC Centre for hosting the students for the site visits, and for the time taken to interact with them about the important place of Art and Craft in the world of Tourism and Entrepreneurship. Thanks are also extended to local artists I-Wassie-I Fleming, Sharon Fleming, Shanica Robinson and Kerniel Chung, who took the time out to be on location at the MIAXA Centre to speak to the students about their individual art forms. Thanks are also extended to Mrs. Paula Connor, Miss Dejonique Bhagwann-Carty and Miss Kenesha Barbrow of the DoE’s Administration Unit and the DoE bus drivers, for their assistance in arranging the logistics for the site visits.
