The Government of Anguilla is very concerned with the increased problems created by free-roaming animals. Residents continue to bombard the Department of Natural Resources (Agriculture Unit) with complaints – including the destruction of livestock by dogs, pedestrians being attacked by dogs, farmers’ cultivation being destroyed by free-roaming goats and sheep. The Department of Natural Resources, therefore, reminds the public of the need for proper animal control in accordance with the laws of Anguilla. In this context, animal refers to any dog, horse, cattle, donkey, mule, sheep, pig or goat.
The Department of Natural Resources and the Royal Anguilla Police Force (RAPF) encourage all animal owners to make a special effort to control all free-roaming animals. Animals should not be allowed to wander unaccompanied on the public road – posing a hazard to road users; neither should they be trespassing on other people’s property, being a nuisance or causing damage to crops and livestock. Animal owners are asked to keep the animals on their property or on the property for which permission has been granted.
On 4 December 2020 a campaign will be initiated by the Department and the RAPF where all free-roaming animals found wandering, trespassing, being a nuisance or causing damage as outlined previously, may be impounded at the owner’s expense or otherwise dealt with according to the law – and owners prosecuted. These steps have become necessary to safeguard life, property and livelihoods.
