The month of September 2020 has been marked as Attendance Awareness Month in all public primary schools under the theme, “School Achievement Begins With School Attendance”. The highlight of this month was “Sock It To Truancy” Day which was observed on Friday, 25th September.
Education Welfare Officers, Conisha Gumbs and Natasha Carty, the key organisers of the event, saw the need to send a strong, forceful and direct message about eliminating truancy among students. This day saw students and staff wearing brightly coloured, creatively decorated socks as a symbol to end (Sock It) truancy – and to highlight the importance of attending school regularly and on time.
The Education Welfare Officers are grateful to three past Education Welfare Officers, Mr. Carlton Pickering, Mrs. Ursil Webster-Brooks, and Ms. Erica Richardson – as well as Ms. Tyiesha Emmanuel and Mr. Rudy Webster who visited schools and emphasised the message of regular and early attendance at school.
Parents are encouraged to ensure that their children attend school regularly and on time.
