Anguilla’s Government Ministers joined the rest of the country today to show their appreciation for the work teachers do. Ministers took time out of their busy schedules, and descended on the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School (ALHCS) to teach classes in the areas of their formal training or in areas that are related to their work.

The Hon. Minister of Education, Ms. Dee-Ann Kentish-Rogers, spearheaded the initiative in collaboration with the Department of Education and the ALHCS.

Minister Kenneth Hodge
Premier Dr. Ellis L. Webster

Minister Dee-Ann Kentish-Rogers
Parliamentary Secretary, Quincia Gumbs-Marie
Special Assistant, Courtney Morton

Ministerial Assistant, Merrick Richardson
Minister Haydn Hughes

Reflecting on the initiative, the Hon. Minister of Education, Ms. Dee-Ann Kentish-Rogers, stated, “Every year during Teachers’ Week, the Government thanks and congratulates our teachers for their hard work. This year, we wanted to go a step further to intimately understand the reality on the ground and share a small load with teachers even if only for a day. The Government of Anguilla had a great time with the students and can’t wait to engage with them again for Teachers’ Week next year”.

Ministers were assigned to specific subject classes. See list below:

1. Hon. Merrick Richardson – Personal Social and Health Education (PSHE)
2. Hon. Kyle Hodge – PSHE
3. Hon. Quincia Gumbs-Marie – PSHE
4. Hon. Kenneth Hodge – PSHE
5. Hon. Ellis L. Webster – Science
6. Hon. Dee-Ann Kentish-Rogers – Social Studies
7. Hon. Haydn Hughes – Hospitality

In addition, a Technical Drawing Class was taken by Mr. Courtney Morton.

Principal of the ALHCS, Mrs. Rita Celestine-Carty, acknowledged the opportunity that this thoughtful gesture afforded the Government Officials to appreciate, first-hand, the developmental experiences provided at the School. Additionally, the activity was also certainly a memorable occasion for the Form 3 students whose retention of the subject matter taught could well be heightened by the novel teaching-learning situation.

Teachers also expressed their appreciation for the gesture, and commented on the positive reception Ministers received from the students and the robust engagement that occurred during the classes.

Chief Education Officer, Mr. Bren Romney, welcomed the initiative and expressed his desire to see it become a regular feature during the teaching fraternity’s annual celebration of the profession (Teachers’ Week).
