Anguilla’s former Honourable Chief Minister, Mr. Hubert Benjamin Hughes, was honoured at a double ceremony on his 87th birthday on Thursday evening, October 15.
The first event was a road-naming ceremony at the Easy Corner Junction, South Hill. Named the Hubert Benjamin Hughes’ Drive, the road goes all the way down to the Albert Hughes’ Drive, at the Long Bay Junction. That event began at 5 o’clock. The second event was a Birthday Thanksgiving Service which began at 6 o’clock the South Hill Community Field.
The events were a collaboration involving the District 6 community and the Government of Anguilla, in honour of the contributions of the former Chief Minister and Mrs. Hughes.
Mr. Hughes has had the distinction of having been involved in the electoral process in Anguilla for over five decades. His actual political leadership spanned some thirty-six years as an Elected Member of the Anguilla House of Assembly, including three terms as Chief Minister. The founder of the then Anguilla United Movement, he retired from active politics in the run-up to the 2015 general elections. His wife, Mrs. Norma Hughes, has had a long teaching career. She taught at the Adrian T. Hazell Primary School and was later transferred to the Alwyn Allison Richardson Primary School where she served as Principal.
A large crowd, comprising members of the Executive Council, the House of Assembly, the public service and the rank and file of the island-wide communities attended both the road-naming ceremony and the thanksgiving service.
The former Chief Minister, assisted by Mrs. Hughes, unveiled the road sign. Following that, Mr. Hughes delivered a brief address. He thanked all for honouring him and Mrs. Hughes, for their presence and invited them to stay on for the thanksgiving service just down on the South Hill Field. He expressed the hope that the road, named in his honour, would be the safest driveway in Anguilla.
Both events occurred during The Anguillian newspaper’s press time, thus limiting our coverage. Further details of both events will be published in next week’s edition of the newspaper.
