The University of The West Indies (UWI) Open Campus Anguilla and the Anguilla Country Conference Committee in collaboration with the Methodist Church, Anguilla Circuit will present their distinguished Emancipation Lecture on Sunday, September 20, 2020 at 6:00 p.m. at the Ebenezer Methodist Chapel in the Historic Lower Valley.
The keynote Speaker for the Lecture is Mr. Carlyle Rogers, a Barrister by profession and a former history teacher at the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School. Mr. Rogers is a lover of history, especially Anguillian history, and will focus his lecture on slavery in Anguilla and how the slave owners were compensated.
Manager of the UWI Open Campus Anguilla and the British Overseas Territories, Dr. Phyllis Fleming-Banks posited, “While Emancipation is celebrated on the 1st of August, it is something that should be celebrated continuously as it represents all of our freedoms. Emancipation and by extension this lecture is a celebration of our ancestors, their resilience and their legacy. The depth and scope of what we have inherited should never be underestimated, for out of much adversity we have persevered.”
The Emancipation Lecture, which was originally slated for August, will be dedicated to the memory of the Reverend Dr. Wycherley Gumbs, who was instrumental in the planning of the lecture, including the selection of the historic Ebenezer Chapel as the venue. During the programme selections will be presented by the Anguilla National Choir, Roots Binghi, Ebenezer Men’s Fellowship and musicians, Mr. Lennox Vanterpool & Akira Rogers.
All are invited to be a part of this lecture as we reflect on our past and look to the future with more confidence.
