On Friday 14th August, 2020, the Department of Youth and Culture hosted its Certificate Ceremony for the Job Link-Up Programme (2020 cohort). Clients were referred to the programme for a period of six months – and despite the many challenges faced due to the impact of COVID-19, all fourteen (14) clients successfully completed the programme.
The Job Link Up Programme targets young people between the ages of 16-30, who are considered ‘vulnerable’ due to particular socio-economic factors which may prevent them from gaining employment. The programme provides an individually tailored package of work experience, training, guidance and counselling to each client that is on the programme.
For the 2020 cohort, thirteen (13) clients sat diagnostic assessments in both literacy and numeracy – seven clients benefited from continuing education opportunities through the Business and Technology Education Council (BTEC) Work skills programme at the Anguilla Community College and are currently awaiting results. Additionally, all clients benefited from behavioural and career counselling. Mentorship is an important component of the programme and all of the clients were paired with a trained mentor to guide them through the programme and also provide additional support after the programme for an additional six months. Mrs. Jennifer Gumbs was recognised for her service as a Mentor to young people and her willingness to serve.
Seven (7) clients received job placements through the programme. The Department wishes to extend gratitude to the businesses for their support: Water Corporation of Anguilla, Resorts and Residences by Cuisinart, The Anguilla Big Store, Roy’s Bayside Grill, Sharpy’s Shake Shack and Tropical Treats.
As an enhancement to our programme and to further address the needs of the clients, the Department partnered with Sergeant Shem McDowall of the Royal Anguilla Police Force who voluntarily offered his service to facilitate Driving Theory/Road Safety Classes to clients who were eligible.
