Friday, July 3rd, was a noteworthy day for Sixth Grade students of the island’s six public primary schools. It was Transition Day, a time when all six graders would gather together and engage in meaningful activities that would enable them to familiarize themselves with each other. The primary purpose of Transition Day is so that, upon entering the ALHCS in September, the students of the various schools would be, to some extent, acquainted with each other.
This year, the Transition Day get together was held at the Ronald Webster Park pavilion, and the playing field was utilized for games and social activities which encouraged the students to initiate amiable friendships through sports settings. The event was directed by the Guidance Counsel Unit of the Education Department, headed by Mrs. Vivienne Fleming, accompanied by two other Counselors, Ms. Chanicia Buchanan and Ms. Janelle Lake.
The Anguillian reached out to Guidance Counselor, Janelle Lake for comments on the event. She noted: “In collaboration with the Physical Education teachers we have hosted our annual Grade 6 Transition Day for the six public primary schools on the Island. Over 200 students attended.
“The activities for the day included devotions, and an introduction of the Guidance Counselors in order that students be familiar with the support system provided. Motivational guest speakers were also a part of the event. Every year we source different persons as pep speakers. This year we were graced with the presence of Jahmar Hamilton and Montcin Hodge who addressed the boys. Both Mr. Hamilton and Mr. Hodge are a part of the Leeward Islands Hurricanes Cricket Team. In addition, Mr. Hamilton is a member of the West Indies Senior Cricket Team.
“Twyla Richardson-Thomas and Latoya Scarboro, two female entrepreneurs who founded the Confetti Dust Company, addressed the girls. Both groups were engaged in lively discussions as the guest speakers encouraged the students to stay focused and work hard.
“The event ended with sporting activities conducted by the P.E. Teachers. The aim of the event is to bring all the Grade 6 students together in an effort to foster healthy relationships and to make the transition to Campus B from primary school as easy and comfortable as possible.”
The annual Transition Day meet was instituted in 2019. Friday’s Transition Day was the second one held in this school year in an effort to concretize newly found friendships created during the first term.
