In another rare event in the Anguilla House of Assembly, the Deputy Governor, Mr. Perin Bradley, was elected to serve as Deputy Speaker on July 17, 2020.
It is the first time that such a Member of the Assembly was elected to serve as Deputy Speaker, although the 1982 Anguilla Constitution made provision for such an election.
Since the provision of that Constitution, one of the two Nominated Members usually filled the appointment. Now, with the abolition of the Nominated Members, following the recent constitutional amendments, it created an abnormality whereby it was necessary for the Deputy Governor to serve in that position.
At the outset of the Assembly, the Premier and Leader of Government Business, Dr. Ellis Webster, rose to his feet and said: “We nominate Mr. Perin A. Bradley for the position as Deputy Speaker of the Twelfth Anguilla House of Assembly. Mr. Perin Bradley meets the provisions for qualification under the Anguilla Constitution Order 1982.”
The Deputy Governor and the Attorney General are normally Ex-Officio Members in the Anguilla House of Assembly.
