Every year we set aside this special time to remember the men and women of the 1967 Revolution. It is always important for us to understand our history and the bravery and sacrifice of these heroes and heroines during a time of oppression and victimization. These men and women refused to back down and stayed committed to the vision of a free and self-determined Anguilla where all our people had equal opportunity and prosperity.
Anguilla Day 2020 also coincides with our General Election cycle. This is a critical turning point for our country, where the people will decide on a new government. Such a decision requires careful consideration of our history, our present circumstances, and where we need to be. If we are to really take the time to reflect on the past 50 years in our governance in Anguilla, then most would conclude that we have fallen short of the expectation and vision of the late James Ronald Webster – Father of the Nation. This was a vision centred on Love, Unity and Respect; a vision of equal opportunity and prosperity for all under a modern democratic government made up of competent individuals committed to the service of the people, who exemplify kingdom values.
However, the deep political divide in Anguilla, coupled with mudslinging, personal attacks, dishonesty and deception paint a very different picture than our revolutionary heroes and heroines envisaged. We have strayed from this One Anguilla vision, allowing the selfish interests of a select few to overwhelm and oppress us. It is important to understand these issues clearly and come to the realization that the political party system in Anguilla has been an incubator that perpetuates this present dilemma.
Yet, in the midst of such darkness there is always hope; a light that shines within the good hearts of right-thinking Anguillians who are determined to secure a better future; a future not just for themselves and their families, but for all. This has been exemplified in the love, caring and compassion of our people in these challenging COVID-19 times. It is that care and concern for our fellowman – being our brother’s keeper – that truly represents the essence of the revolution. In demonstrating these qualities, we honour the sacrifice of those who have paved the way for us.
The decision before us in this next election is a serious one. I urge all right thinking Anguillians to elect individuals based on their character, competency and demonstrated commitment to the community. Voting solely on party lines and party or family affiliations will result in a continuous cycle of poor governance. We cannot afford to continue down this path. You have the power to create a new and brighter future for Anguilla. Your ability to reason, weigh the arguments, and discern what is fake and what is genuine are all the tools that you need to make the best decision possible in the best interests of your country and your children.
I am so grateful to all those who participated in the 1967 Anguilla Revolution. I never grow weary of listening to their stories as they reminisce of a time when men and women joined hearts and hands, rolled up their sleeves and built a country against all odds. I thank you for paving the way for us, and it is my prayer that we will honour your contribution by seeking to do the right thing by our people. As we celebrate Anguilla Day, let us cherish the moments that make us truly Anguillian – one memory at a time.
