The Anguilla Government’s decision to further extend the closure of the island’s borders to May 31, has met with the full support of various persons who responded on the Governor’s Facebook page.
Some of the early comments were: “100% supportive”; “Great. But extend it to July 31st please.”; “Agree. Thank you for keeping us safe. We can see the death rate spiking in countries trying to reopen too soon”; “Agree with that decision, better safe than sorry”; “Wise! I think other places are opening up too soon!”; “Agree but it needs to be extended until the other Caribbean countries are virus negative”; “Yes Anguilla! Keeping people safe.”
Anguilla’s borders are being protected by daily local aircraft and boat patrols. The outgoing Premier and Minister of Finance recently disclosed that the island’s borders are being protected at a cost of 840,000 dollars a month. Financial assistance for this purpose has been provided by the UK Government through the Governor’s Office which has responsibility for the security of Anguilla.
A press release dated Monday, May 11, on the Governor’s Facebook page stated: “The Governor’s Office wishes to advise the public that the Minister of Health and Social Development has signed regulations to extend the closure of Anguilla’s borders to passenger movement until 31 May, 2020.
“Please take not that it is possible that the border closure to passenger movement will be extended further. The situation will be revised ahead of the current end date of 31 May. We urge you not to make travel plans or bookings.”
