Anguilla’s Director of Social Security, Mr. Timothy Hodge, will represent the Caribbean Region’s Social Security Systems in an online Webinar sponsored by the International Social Security Association (ISSA). The ISSA, with headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, serves member national social security and other member institutions internationally.
The coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis has disrupted life all around the world, and social security plays a key role in national responses to mitigate its social and economic impact. Coping with an increase in demand for social security benefits and services, while implementing restrictions that significantly affect human resources, business processes and service delivery channels, is a huge challenge for social security institutions across the world. The ISSA has launched its Webinar series, “Delivering social security in times of COVID-19”, to support the efforts of social security institutions and enable effective exchanges on approaches and lessons learnt.
The Anguilla Social Security System has provided innovative responses to COVID-19 including online submission of claim forms, direct deposits for employers, and the establishment of a temporary Unemployment and Underemployment Benefit. Several Caribbean social security systems have utilized the Anguilla response in crafting their own responses. Mr. Hodge will provide the Anguilla and Caribbean response during the Webinar, while the CEO of the South African Social Security Agency, Ms. Busisiwe Memela, will present responses from the African continent. The Webinar, entitled “COVID-19: Social Security and the Challenges Ahead: Strategies and Operational Measures”, will take place on Tuesday 19th May 2020 at 10 am local time. It is expected to have an international audience and will allow for some interaction between the audience and the participants.
