As a lead up to the celebration of World Poetry Day on March 21, 2020, the Malliouhana Poetry Organising Committee has launched a new initiative dubbed “Poetry for People”. As part of this initiative the Committee is collaborating with Radio Anguilla and a number of local performers/artistes to present some thirty poems by authors from Anguilla, the Caribbean, the wider African diaspora and the world.

The celebration will begin with the airing of the poems from March 2nd to 20th, 2020, culminating with a live programme on “Social Solutions” on March 21st, World Poetry Day,

According to the Committee, March 21st was designated as World Poetry Day by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1999 in recognition of the unique ability of poetry to capture the creative spirit of the human mind. Poetry has historically played an important role in the arts and in cultures throughout the world and this year the local Poetry Committee is focusing on promoting the oral tradition of poetry recitals.
March 21st is also the deadline for submissions for the Malliouhana Poetry Competition 2020 and the Committee is encouraging more persons to write and share their poetry, and/or participate in the annual Competition.
