Students in the local Early Childhood Education Care and Development programme, at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Open Campus Anguilla, recently completed a series of Fire Safety and First Aid Training sessions. The training is part of the requirements of the “Health, Safety and Nutrition for Young Children” course in the Continuing Professional Education (CPE) programme at the Site.
Fire Officer, Carlisle Lake, of the Anguilla Fire and Rescue Service conducted the session on Fire Safety, while Course Facilitator and Health Educator, Nurse Dana Ruan, led the sessions on First Aid. The hands-on training for the Pre-School Teachers and Day Care Providers in the programme, was aimed at increasing their awareness of basic safety practices and emergency procedures. The students also undertook risk assessments of various childcare establishments to identify potential indoor/outdoor environmental hazards and risks – as well as corrective measures that may be taken to ensure the safety of the children and caregivers.
Other topics in the course included Nutrition and Food Safety, Preventing Illnesses in Young Children, Social and Emotional Health, Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect, and Health Care for Children with Special Needs.
The Staff and Students at the UWI Open Campus Anguilla have extended their appreciation to Nurse Ruan, Fire Officer Lake and the Anguilla Fire and Rescue Service, and the various Pre-Schools/Day Care establishments for their support.
