Gun crime is a major concern for the people of Anguilla. Tackling it is the RAPF’s number one priority.
This year has started badly. There has been three shootings taking the lives of two people. We have charged one person in respect of one of those incidents, but the others – as yet – remain unsolved.
The RAPF is putting all its resources into bringing those responsible to justice. But we need the public to work with us. Each of the recent incidents was witnessed by more than 20 people. To date no one has come forward to assist in bringing the offenders to justice. We understand some people may be reluctant to come forward, but recognizing this we have an established witness protection scheme in place.
We need to remove illegal firearms from our streets and bring those who use them to threaten, rob and kill to justice. Those that bring illegal guns and ammunition into Anguilla, and those that supply them to others are as guilty for these senseless deaths as the person pulling the trigger.
Every shooting has a devastating impact on the families and friends of the victims. Guns destroy lives. Those that survive carry the physical and emotional scars forever. The families of those that are killed, lose a son, daughter, grandson, granddaughter, a father a mother. The pain these events cause wounds us as a community.
The RAPF needs your help. We will pay for any information which leads to the recovery of an unlicensed firearm. I assure you all information will be kept in in confidence. Only together can we put an end to gun crime.
