4 February 2020, The Valley, Anguilla – Students from the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School and the Omololu International School had the opportunity to engage with local artists, on 31 January, as part of their preparations to participate in the 2020 Creative Youth Competition hosted and sponsored by the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) and the Regional Security System-Asset Recovery Unit (RSS-ARU).
Students entering the competition will be required to prepare artwork based on one of the following topics:
1. Recycling: Waste Management for an Eco-friendly Region
2. Cultural Awareness: Keeping Our Culture Alive
3. Combatting Crime through Financial Investigations and Asset Recovery
An informational session was held at the Teachers Resource Centre, The Valley, to allow students to exchange their ideas and increase their understanding of the competition’s objectives, requirements and topics. The students also had the opportunity to interact directly with accomplished artists who facilitated the three segments of the session as follows:
• Alaina Carty Teacher, Visual Arts Department of the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School – Should I Draw or Paint? Finding Your Style: What you should know about the two techniques;
• Taffari Crawford, local artist and Head Instructor at Ani Art Academy IES, Anguilla – Getting Artsy With the Judging Criteria: What students should look at when creating their pieces; and
• Navene Mairyshaw, Head Teacher, Visual Arts Department of the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School – Art Is a Career Too: Turning Art into Income.
