On Tuesday, February 19th, selected students of the Vivien Vanterpool Primary School were honoured for their performance over the first term of the 2019/2020 school year. The event took place at the school in Island Harbour with several parents in attendance as well as teachers and Education Officer Primary, Mrs. Susan Smith.
According to the Principal, Mrs. Mavis Fleming-Drakes, the event took the place of the usual PTA meeting where, for the first time, students’ performance was recognized in all grades of the school. The aim of the ceremony was to motivate students to continue striving for excellence and to encourage their parents to support item in their studies and to attend the regular PTA meetings.
The Principal noted: “At this ceremony, we want our students to feel special and enthusiastic. They need to know that we recognize they have done a good job in their performance. I believe that education is a process of excitement, and when parents see passion and enthusiasm on their children’s faces it means quite a lot.”
She continued: “It is the same thing for our teachers. They love to see passion on their students’ faces too. I wish to thank our teachers for work well done. Parents, we thank you for being here, and for the constant support which you give to your children in pursuing their education.”
There were 13 students honoured on the Principal’s List, who achieved Grade A in all of their tests. Of these, two were from Grade 1; two from Grade 2; two from Grade 3; two from Grade 4; and five from Grade 5. There were none from Grade 6.
On the Deputy Principal’s List 18 students were honoured. These included: four from Grade 1; three from Grade 2; two from Grade 3; three from Grade 4; three from Grade 5; and three from Grade 6.
Students who sat the Test of Standards and Standardized Exams and who gained passes of 50% to 79% were also honoured and given recognition as follows: 14 students from Grade 3 for passes in Language, Math, Social Studies and Science; and eleven from Grade 4 in Literacy and Numeracy.
For the Test of Standards and Standardized Exams, nine students from Grade 5 passed with sores of 50% to 79%, and students from Grade 6 passed with 50% to 79% scores.
The awards were presented to the students by Deputy Principal, Ms. Jameisha Webster. Those students who achieved 80% and over in their exams will be awarded subsequently.
