The first cohort of the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) Level 5 Certificate in Management and Leadership will launch on February 5th 2019 at the Anguilla Community College. The CMI is an accredited institution based in the United Kingdom, providing professional development, continuing education, mentoring and networking opportunities for management professionals. The initial cohort of CMI candidates on Anguilla focuses primarily on practicing managers and persons on a management track expecting to take on managerial roles in the near future, but lacking formal management training. Candidates in the first cohort will pursue the Level 5 Certificate in Leadership and Management with the potential to go on to earn even more credits at Level 5 (diplomas or extended diplomas) or to proceed to higher qualification levels – 6, 7 and 8.
This CMI programme launch is due, in part, to a contribution from the Anguilla Social Security Board (ASSB) that was used to underwrite the CMI centre application process and the development of required learning resources. Mr Timothy Hodge the Director of Social Security, explained the Board’s support for the CMI Level 5 Certificate in Management and Leadership, based on “its potential to impact management and leadership practice on the island in both the public and private sectors.” Mr Hodge went on to say that “Education is a critical component of social development, and as such it is one of the areas of focus for the ASSB’s grant funding of socially desirable…projects.” The Director highlighted that the CMI programme is “reflective of the Board’s transformational strategic plan,…to enhance value to our citizens and communities through education and empowerment.” He further noted that the CMI Programme in Management and Leadership at the Anguilla Community College “aligns with the ASSB’s Mission which is, to transform the quality of life in Anguilla by providing meaningful social security, community empowerment and national development.” Mr Hodge encouraged persons to take advantage of the opportunity to hone their management and leadership skills.
CMI Programme Director at the ACC, Mr J. Christopher Richardson, also holds the view that CMI will make a long term impact on the quality of management practice in Anguilla, not only by the courses offered but by the ongoing support that would be available should a CMI chapter be established here. Due to emphasis on improving management practice, Mr Richardson indicated that care was taken to recruit trained and experienced managers to serve as facilitators in the programme. Richardson, himself, is a veteran of the hospitality industry while ACC President, Dr Karl Dawson, and Head of Hospitality, Sharon Richardson, have combined management experience in education and hospitality. Permanent Secretary Larry Franklin, and former BVI Chief Physical Planner, Marva Titley-Smith, will also bring significant public and private sector experience to the CMI workshops. The programme will be delivered through a series of fortnightly full-day professional workshops with required assignments sent to CMI in the UK for assessment.
