Following the receipt of more than 70 new applications for its Semester Two online programmes, The University of the West Indies (UWI) Open Campus Anguilla welcomed its latest group of students at a special Orientation/Meet & Greet Session on Wednesday, January 8, 2020. The majority of the new students are enrolled in the general programmes, while some are taking advantage of the “Special Admissions” opportunity to register in selected online courses.
During the interactive session, the new Students were applauded by Manager for The UWI Open Campus British Overseas Territories, Dr. Phyllis Fleming-Banks, and local Site Staff, Mrs. Arlene Brown-Richardson and Ms. Patricia Bryan. Also on hand to provide support and guidance were Executive Members of the Guild of Students, Ms. Kemoloy Murphy, Ms. Melissa Harrigan and Mrs. Linette Carty.
In her congratulatory remarks, Dr. Fleming-Banks thanked and commended the new students for choosing The UWI – a university that is well-placed in the top four per cent of universities in the world. “Not only are you part of a distinguished institution that will provide you with a relevant, world-class education. You have also chosen a University that offers you the flexibility of achieving your goals at a fraction of external costs, without leaving your family or your jobs”, she said.
According to Dr. Fleming-Banks, The UWI Open Campus Anguilla Site is pleased that, in addition to its more mature students, the local arm of The University continues to see an increasing number of younger students, who are taking advantage of the opportunity to earn their degrees without incurring the huge loans normally associated with tertiary education. A Bachelor’s Degree from start to finish at The UWI Open Campus is about US$11,000.00, while Master’s Degrees cost about US$8,000.00 and Doctoral programmes average US$20,000.00, she said.
Semester Two 2019/2020 at The UWI Open Campus began on January 2nd with online orientation and registration, and the new students are expected to officially begin their studies on the 20th January. The local, face-to-face, continuing and professional development programmes will begin during the week of 29th January.
