It has now been revealed that one of the recently elected Labour Party candidates was born of Nevisian parents and has family links in Anguilla.
She is Ms. Claudia Webbe who was born In England but her parents are from Nevis. She is the niece of Mrs. Sylvene Petty of Pond Ground, Anguilla.
Shortly before the UK general election, Ms. Webbe issued the following statement: “I am the Labour Party candidate for Leicester East. Leicester is where I was born. Leicester is where I grew up. It’s where I went to school. My family are a part of the Leicester East community. This city is such an important part of my life. I am a daughter of the Windrush Generation.
“My parents came from Nevis, in the Caribbean, to the UK and settled here in Leicester. Through blood, sweat and tears my parents and others from the Windrush Generation built this country that we know today. As a family, those early days meant we lived in one room with nothing but a paraffin lamp to heat and cook as we faced those racists signs ‘No Dogs. No Irish. No Black.’
“This is what makes me passionate about Labour today and our fight for social justice. I know where I come from, and I know first-hand many of the difficulties that people in Leicester East face. I have dedicated my whole life to this pursuit so that no child goes to bed hungry – or where parents don’t have to make that impossible choice between heating and eating.
“I’m honoured to stand as your Labour candidate and I pledge to deliver a better future for all our communities. I believe in a Labour Government that stands against austerity to bring hope and real change to the many families here in Leicester East.
“On Thursday, the 12th of December vote Labour. Vote me, Claudia Webbe, for Leicester East.”
Ms. Webbe began serving as the Member of Parliament for Leicester East on December 13, 2019. She was formerly the chairperson of Operation Trident, having participated in its development in the mid- 1990s. She is a Councillor and the Cabinet Member for Energy, Environment & Transport in the London Borough of Islington, and has been a member of the National Executive Committee of the Labour Party since 2016.
