The boxing sport in Anguilla, which now involves some 20 male and female enthusiasts, has received a considerable boost with the provision and launch of a Boxing Ring.

The launch took place on Tuesday, November 26, on the second floor of the Tomac Plaza building, at the Water Swamp, where the Anguilla Amateur Boxing Association is located.

Acting Governor, Mr. Perin Bradley said Governor Tim Foy, who was impressed by Anguilla’s participation in the boxing competition at the Commonwealth Games in Australia, had provided the Boxing Ring, having secured funding from the Global Britain Fund.

Mr. Bradley spoke about the benefits that can be derived by Anguillian young people with an interest in the sport of boxing.

Other speakers were Mr. Andre Collins, Director of Sports; Mr. Cardigan Connor, Parliamentary Secretary responsible for sports; Mr. James Carty, President of the Anguilla Amateur Boxing Association – all of whom spoke about the importance of promoting sports on the island and in particular boxing.

The Vote of Thanks was delivered by Mr. Delano Mussington of the Department of Sports.
The opening ceremony was chaired by Mr. Kenneth Hodge, the Boxing Association’s Public Relations Officer.

The ceremony was followed by an impressive friendly boxing performance by Curlun Richardson, one of Anguilla’s two participants in the Commonwealth Games three years ago, and Japhet Otton, an emerging boxer.
