With the implementation of the new Labour (Relations) Act on Anguilla, The University of the West Indies (UWI) Open Campus Anguilla is collaborating with the Ministry of Home Affairs (Labour) to provide capacity building training for labour officials.
The Ministry is seeking to ensure that all persons and entities involved in the dispute settlement process receive adequate training in dispute resolution procedures and the effective functioning of industrial dispute tribunals. The initial training for Labour Officers, Inspectors, the Commissioner and members of the Labour Tribunal will take place on 14th and 15th November 2019.
The two-day workshop will be conducted by Dr Suzette Henry-Campbell and Mr Dillon Doyle from the Hugh Shearer Labour Studies Institute Consortium for Social Development and Research at the University of the West Indies Open Campus in Jamaica. Dr Henry-Campbell, who holds a doctorate in Conflict Analysis and Resolution, specialises in Negotiations, Risk Management, Leadership, Ethical Literacy and Conflict Coaching. Mr Doyle is a Professional Trainer in Employment Relations and Adjunct Lecturer at the Mona School of Business and Management. He specialises in Grievance Handling, Conflict Resolution and Disciplinary Procedure and Conciliation.
The training will focus on conciliation services and best practices in the conduct of dispute resolution including evaluative mediation procedures and Tribunals hearings to provide participants with the relevant consensus-seeking skills to assist in resolving labour disputes and achieving mutually beneficial outcomes. According to the Facilitators, the workshop will also assist in bridging the gap in thinking and approaches between the traditional and stereotypical approaches to workplace management practice of industrial relations and the new dispensation which balances efficiency and equity in a changing work environment.
The Honourable Cora Richardson Hodge, Minister of Labour is pleased to partner with the UWI Open Campus to deliver this training as it will ensure that the provisions for dispute resolution outlined in the Labour (Relations) Act are properly administered and that the persons responsible for implementation are well equipped with the knowledge and skills to assist affected parties in accessing justice.
Manager for the UWI Open Campus British Overseas Territories, Dr. Phyllis Fleming Banks says that the Open Campus is delighted to facilitate this training through the Hugh Shearer Labour Studies Institute, which is the UWI Open Campus Unit charged with helping to shape regional development through specialised training in labour relations and looks forward to the positive outcomes in the Anguillian context.
