The Blowing Point Community Group is leading the way in keeping the beach in that important tourism port clean and pristine.
In order to accomplish this, the Group, with the involvement of the Elected Representative for Road South, Mr. Curtis Richardson, has employed a Blowing Point resident, Mr. Castell Eugene Brooks, to undertake the cleaning of the beach on a full-time basis.
“This need for regular clean-up first became apparent in July 2018 with the establishment of the August Wednesday Boat Race at the Blowing Point Beach,” the Group stated. “Initially, Anguillians and tourists alike were apprehensive about boat-racing returning to Blowing Point. However, with the dedication of the members of the community, it was realised that despite the boat-racing, the beach would be kept clean both during that event and at all other times.”
The press release from the Blowing Point Group continued: “In acknowledgement of Mr. Brooks’ dedication, we advocated to the Department of Environment for him to be paid for his consistency to community efforts. However, this request was initially declined. We then successfully took our petition to our District Leader, Mr. Curtis Richardson, who approved our request. It is planned that the Department will make provisions in its budget next year for such a service.
Mr. Brooks cares for the Blowing Point Beach as if it is his own. He faithfully cleans it six days a week starting at 5 am regardless of weather conditions and any adversity he may face. The Blowing Point Community Group, alongside Mr. Brooks, is imploring everyone to keep our beach clean. In order to facilitate our clean-up efforts, we are requesting at least two garbage bins to be strategically placed on our beach. Together we can keep Anguilla clean.”
The Group’s press release added: “For more than 70% of tourists, the Blowing Point Ferry Terminal is their first port of entry into Anguilla. How we maintain our surroundings is not only a reflection on our community, but on how we feel about ourselves. Keeping our environment in pristine condition sets the tone for how Anguilla is perceived and will leave a sticking first impression on our guests.”
